Team
The research is led by industry experts, gathering empirical data to empower opera professionals, inform industry leaders and decision-makers, and provide valuable insights for those who support or enjoy the artform.
Overview
This study seeks to examine the sustainability of opera careers in the UK, with reference to socio-economic changes such as Brexit, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the cost-of-living crisis.
By articulating the challenges faced by UK-based opera singers, the study will provide a comprehensive understanding of the employment landscape, the efficacy of professional training, and barriers that inhibit the flourishing of operatic talent within the UK. The aim is to ignite a productive and well-informed dialogue among stakeholders, from government and philanthropic entities to educational institutions and professional organisations, promoting a robust and sustainable environment for current and future generations of opera singers.
By combining qualitative interviews with key practitioners and organisations with quantitative surveys of recent graduates and seasoned professionals, this study will explore the root causes of attrition within the field, identify gaps in support systems, and propose actionable solutions.
Guided by industry advocates and informed by direct input from opera professionals, the findings will culminate in a manifesto designed to set industry standards, advocate for fair practices, and outline strategic recommendations to sustain the UK’s operatic talent pool.
